Hot Rocks (youth stack) is a 6 x 9 ft. banner created as part of a hole or something like the sun, a weekend-long exhibit in Wonder Valley, CA in May 2016. I wanted to make “tree-hugger”-type images but with large boulders, and was interested in contrasting senses of time and materiality. The image is analogous to my experience of the desert as both a nurturing and harsh landscape. I was inspired by the avant-garde photomontages, with their odd scale relationships and surreal depictions of the body in the landscape.
